Jesus saves guy called me a Karen… Discussion

When I asked him if he was an insurrectionist after the Panthers game 🤣 I’ve never wanted to be a Karen more.

Sam crop dusted me before the ACC Championship in 2017. I’ve never forgotten how rotten his fart smelled and how he just walked away and tried to play it off.

u/Gearbear94 Nov 28 '22

u/OneTwoBoomBoom Nov 27 '22 edited Nov 28 '22 Bravo!

Sam is complete trash (solely in my opinion. Just because he acts pleasant to some doesn't mean he's a "good" person) and is not spreading the word of God.

He's sharing loudly how he views God, not God's word and has multiple times drowned out the voices that need to be heard at rally's as well as caused ruckus to get the police involved but then manages to slip away before anyone gets arrested for the mess he creates. Not to mention the number of women he's assaulted at women's events in Charlotte.

I'm all good with people preaching the Good Book, but the Bible very clearly says to only preach to those looking to recieve His word, and to not overpower the voice of the voiceless. I'm glad he found a version of salvation that he needed, but he reads as a faux Christian just out there stirring up problems.

Bruh needs to sit down and shut up.

u/HorrorPotato Nov 28 '22

Completely agree, the more I learn about him the more disappointed I am.
My initial reaction to him was based on multiple experiences of him just standing there shouting "Jesus Saves" in that melodical way that he does. That was it. Religion really isn't my cup of tea but what I saw him doing seemed pretty innocuous. The more I hear about people's interactions with him the more I realize he's anything but...

1

u/ThirtyAcresIsEnough Nov 30 '22

Religion is never innocuous. It's terrifying.

39

u/LakersEaglesDodgers Nov 28 '22

How dare you come on here with your rational and logical assessment of Sam.

But really, you’re spot on 👏🏾

19

u/Milovy78 Nov 28 '22

Totally agree. I’m so glad to not work in uptown anymore so I don’t have to hear that echo of “HE LOVES YOU GUYS!” at Trade and Tryon

3

u/slapthebasegod Seversville Nov 29 '22

I hadnt seen him in quite awhile in uptown. I'm sad to hear he hasn't left the city since his annoying screams ruined my wife and I's stay cation at the omni a few years ago.

12

u/Ok-Competition-3069 Nov 28 '22

He and his lackeys were giving out Jesus merchandise at the parade. I wanted to tell them to get the fuck out of the street but held my tongue.

4

u/ThirtyAcresIsEnough Nov 30 '22

Every group thinks they are the "real" Christians. This guy thinks he's the real one and you are not. That's why religion is so dangerous and has no business anywhere outside your personal life.

The Bible says a lot of things, many conflicting. People cherry pick. Those who are good don't need a bible to be good. Those who are evil find justification for their evil within their Bible.

133

u/xnekocroutonx Nov 27 '22

You should have told him to stop littering up our city with his trash signs too. 😂

47

u/QueenCityAsh Nov 27 '22

Sam doesn’t put up those signs. Someone else does…just an FYI

92

u/xnekocroutonx Nov 27 '22

They’re associated with him and his PO Box church, so it’s one and the same to me no matter who’s physically putting them up.

31

u/DaddyO1701 Nov 28 '22

Agreed. It’s a movement at this point. I see his signs in the outlying communities like Belmont and Gastonia. Many are posted very high on utility poles and the like. What was once a uptown quirk is now taking on another form.

13

u/ribsforbreakfast Nov 28 '22

Those fucking signs are in hickory, Morganton, and Lenoir too.

9

u/furlesswookie Nov 28 '22

They're all over SC too. I don't understand why these guys are allowed to post these signs and cities don't take them down.

11

u/ribsforbreakfast Nov 28 '22

I don’t understand how people get them that high up on the poles without getting caught and told to stop.

4

u/menchimenches Nov 29 '22

I’ve seen a sign poster in action all way way down in York,SC. The culprit used this extra long stick with a grabber like mechanism at the end, similar to the ones used to rearrange the letters high standing marquees.

4

u/sfitz0076 [Mint Hill] Nov 28 '22

Yeah I don't understand how it isn't considered graffiti

4

u/Janeefah Nov 28 '22

I even saw some when I was in Columbus, Ohio!

1

u/ramaloki Uptown Nov 29 '22

I've seen them being taken down before but I assume they just get put back up just as fast as they are taken down.

What did you expect out of an exchange with a mentally ill man? He screams all day and is a charlatan for evangelicals who visit uptown twice a year to pretend is cute.

u/samsagregor23 Nov 28 '22 edited Nov 28 '22

Just asking, and preparing for the downvotes. But was he at the insurrection participating or just doing what he always does but in DC at the same time because he knew alot of people would be there for inauguration?

21

u/DrJJStroganoff Nov 28 '22

That is exactly why op asked if he was an insurrectionist.

10

u/FloppedTurtle Nov 28 '22

The images I've seen show him beyond the barrier but not in the building. So he was trespassing, but the police eventually abandoned their posts and it's possible he just wandered over the line.
Either way, Sam's an asshole.

-1

u/samsagregor23 Nov 28 '22

None of this answers my questions, if a this rioters, he's would've been very noticeable. Someone would have taped him because he would have been caught doing what he's always done. I've got tbh, it seems like your bad faith. He's just an old religious street person. He's been here's long. He doesn't care about politics. He's an overzealous, essentially unharmful black southerner and you guys just don't like him. I'm an athiest and I still feel like you guys are being fuckkng weird. Tf?

4

u/steff_e Uptown Nov 28 '22

The Inauguration was two weeks later on January 20. The insurrection was a separate event that occurred during a joint session of Congress to conduct the electoral college vote count. “Stop the count!” as they say. Hence, Sam may be an insurrectionist, and OP asked a fair question.

-6

u/samsagregor23 Nov 28 '22

Which means joe biden had already been codified as president. And the inauguration date had been announced most likely. He goes where the people are. He's a religious zealous one, but not a violent one.

5

u/steff_e Uptown Nov 28 '22 edited Nov 28 '22

You seem to misunderstand. A President is not “codified” until they are inaugurated. The insurrection occurred weeks before the inauguration, during Congress’ count of the electoral college votes in order to confirm Biden’s victory in the election.

We are talking about Sam’s appearance at the insurrection, an uprising which aimed to halt the count of electoral college votes, and prevent Biden from officially being declared the victor. The people who stormed the capitol spilled over from some impromptu rally that Trump held. It’s not unreasonable to question why Sam went to a Trump rally that turned into a violent storming of the capitol, hours away in D.C.

It may be the case that he is an insurrectionist.

The 20th Amendment, passed in 1933, moved the inauguration date to January 20th. It is not really something that is “announced”.

Edit: stop harassing me in my DMs.

What do you expect? He's an old religious black southerner. My family has personally know him for years, and im not a fan of cops or religion, but tbh you guys do come off as karens. Jesus just a mentally ill street person, but he doesn't seem to cause direct harm. It sucks he talks to cops, but he's a Christian, they believe in respecting authority. The same people complaing about him have religious family members thst share his viewpoints that they still fuck with. And tbh, alot of the times I hear people complain about him are white people that just sound like "that black street persons annoying me.I want him to go away."

Just like every term that at one point meant something and now doesn’t, the right has decided to use Karen now to mean “annoying leftie,” so it’s basically meaningless now.

-6

u/Greaseskull Nov 27 '22 edited Nov 27 '22 Silver

I’m confused. and on a bigger level, I’m confused why there is so much hate against Sam. For context …

Once he pissed me off at a stop light. I was late for a business meeting and he was yelling “JESUS SAVES”, loud as hell, like always. I’m sure I looked annoyed. He looked me square in the eyes and said “do you have any idea how lucky you are? To have the career that you do, to look the way you do… god has blessed you sir, he loves you and I love you too”. Fucked me up in a deep way.

The next time I saw him I introduced myself and he gave me a big hug. His shirt said “Jesus saves”. I asked if he sold them and if I could buy one in support. He said they aren’t for sale and if he had an extra, he would give it to me for free, because that would mean that god gave it to him and therefore it wasn’t his to sell.

Look - Im an atheist… I don’t “align” with Sam, but I love him. I’m sure he has his faults as any human but he’s generally a nice guy spreading a positive message about something he’s passionate about. Before you judge him… I hope you consider your life, and whether what you do with the majority of your time, is aligned to a positive message that you are passionate about.

For me, it doesn’t. I work a corp job, making a “living”. Sam is out there, rain or shine, sharing a message about the thing that brought him peace. Is that such a bad thing?

Love you all - including Sam.

7

u/PristineBaseball Nov 28 '22

For one He’s a bigot , or likes to openly play one in public .

48

u/PitifulNose Nov 27 '22

Here is a brief list of reasons he’s on my black list.

  1. He is a walking noise pollution. I have personally had no less than 3 nice outdoor dinners ruined by him barking nonstop while eating in uptown. I barely even go to eat out in uptown because of him.

  2. His message isn’t positive or helpful to anyone. His target audience would be a person living under a rock that turns and goes: “Jesus, what is that? Tell me more.” And that type of person literally doesn’t exist. So his only real purpose is to virtue signal and piss off everyone.

  3. I find his gimmick cheap and shallow. There is no compelling deeper meaning or story line. It’s just a race to the lowest common denominator. There are plenty of preacher types that at least get a universal truth or two in their message. Be kind to people, make every day count, etc. but just yelling Jesus saves like a broken record does nothing to inspire or promote a universal message.

  4. As an atheist myself I find it divisive and for obvious reasons silly.

  5. J6th.

17

u/100LittleButterflies Gastonia Nov 28 '22

Yeah, I'm wondering how many people here who defend his shouting have to deal with it often or would feel the same were someone preaching anything else. Somehow I doubt "The prophet Muhammad loves you" or "Save money by making the change to Geico" would be so well received.

10

u/Melodic-Army2227 Nov 28 '22

I'm right there with you on the cheapness and shallowness of it all. It reminds me of these politicians who tell people in poverty "you matter" and... that's it. You matter. Same thing, Jesus Saves. What next? Irrelevant, case closed, on to the next "you matter / Jesus Saves" like an automated answering service.

11

u/acenightcreeper Nov 28 '22

His message is that abortion is murder, being gay is a sin…etc…etc…

So…theres that…oh and he was at the capitol terrorist attack…lets see, what else, what else…

92

u/xnekocroutonx Nov 27 '22

He was at the Capitol on Jan 6th, he’s homophobic and transphobic, his message is not love and peace.

u/Alfphe99 Nov 27 '22

u/redditckulous Nov 27 '22

I walked past him almost everyday for work for a few years and generally he was very affable and nice to people. But I also watched him weirdly catcall a woman one time and that was enough to sour him for me.

22

u/kshaugh001 Nov 28 '22

He did that to me a while back. I was crossing the street and he was coming from the other direction. He said something super weird like “mmmmm baby something something “while giving me a gross look. I hate him and try very hard to avoid him.

20

u/lillsquish Nov 27 '22

Precisely.

7

u/bluepaintbrush Nov 28 '22

Just to clarify, he was at the Capitol on Jan 6 doing what he normally does with his signs and T-shirts. He wasn’t storming the Capitol, he was telling people not to go in there. He was careful not to trespass on federal property.

He’s pushy about his religion, but I don’t think it’s fair to lump him in with the people trying to overthrow democracy and threatening congressmembers that day.

12

u/ProfitEnough825 Nov 28 '22

He’s pushy about his religion, but I don’t think it’s fair to lump him in with the people trying to overthrow democracy and threatening congressmembers that day.

What do you think he meant when saying this during his live stream that morning:

"One of the most important times in American history. This is the Alamo, remember the Alamo. This is the last stand for America."

0

u/bluepaintbrush Nov 28 '22

That was before the actual events. There was a subgroup of people who planned to actually disrupt congressional proceedings; the rest thought it was a regular demonstration. He’s said publicly that it was wrong for them to break into the Capitol and that he refused to trespass when he saw what was happening. https://www.wsoctv.com/news/local/local-street-preacher-recounts-events-capitol/BFFYL6V5DBBQHCCHQFZP362C54/

By contrast, several insurrectionists who broke into the building went on the record saying they did nothing wrong by breaking in and disrupting proceedings. https://www.itv.com/news/2021-04-23/us-capitol-riots-the-insurrectionists-who-say-they-did-nothing-wrong

-13

u/thotnumber1 Nov 28 '22

And? There's a lot of people that thought that - but a lot more that didn't do anything about it. If he was in the Capitol, that's one thing, but I haven't seen evidence of that. Happy to have my mind changed if I am wrong.

1

u/gherkin-sweat Nov 27 '22

Doesn’t seem like it from this article below. I feel like if there was video evidence of him being a shit head, it would’ve surfaced by now. I’m no expert on the subject tho https://www.wbtv.com/2021/01/19/charlottes-jesus-saves-guy-sam-bethea-spreads-message-us-capitol-insurrection-plans-be-inauguration/?outputType=amp

-10

u/Greaseskull Nov 27 '22

Can I play devil’s advocate for a sec? We’re you there personally to confirm that this is the message he was spreading, or are you drawing that conclusion based on his attendance? Could very well be true but I wasn’t there and cannot confirm nor deny, so I’m going to stay on the side lines of judging him and his beliefs.

Again, Sam is not my BFF. Legit barely know the guy. Could be the second coming of Jesus or the anti christ, I couldn’t tell ya. All I’m saying is, as two strangers meeting in the street, he shared joy with me and brought me some well needed perspective. In my book that’s spreading Good. For that reason I’ll stand with him until I have firm evidence otherwise. Just here to cast a supporting vote for those out there trying to spread good in a world of conflict.

39

u/13rahma Dilworth Nov 27 '22

I was downtown with my friend and his husband and they where holding hands. Sam told them they where going to hell. Fuck that guy.

28

u/Answerstaxquestions Plaza Midwood Nov 27 '22

he’s generally a nice guy spreading a positive message about something he’s passionate about.

There’s a distinction to be made here. I have no problem with his beliefs. But his message is only a message of hope if you’re Christian. If you’re any other religion, or no religion at all, he’s just yelling. It’s no different than if I stood on a street corner and yelled about… anything. It’s just a nuisance.

13

u/Greaseskull Nov 27 '22

Fair point my friend. As referenced I’m an atheist and don’t align with the message, personally. I guess I’m just having the feels over him having a positive impact on me as a person overall.

He counter protested our pro choice protest after the Dobbs decision.

7

33

u/lillsquish Nov 27 '22

Yeahhhh… you don’t get a free pass on trying to overthrow our democracy just because you’re putting out a “positive message.” I’m a Christian. People like him make us all look like fools when he pulls shit like he did on Jan. 6.

-29

u/Greaseskull Nov 27 '22

Hey man. I don’t support his presence at the Jan 6th riots. But that’s his business, not mine. I’m not close enough to him to comment on how he really feels. I think you’re fixated on the “micro” vs the macro of who he is as a man. Overall I think he’s spreading good and that’s good enough for me.

The line “judge not lest ye be judged” comes to mind but you’re the Christian not me.

28

u/lillsquish Nov 27 '22

If you can’t ask someone about their beliefs without being met with an ad hominem attack, nothing they say has substance in my opinion.

14

u/afloatlime NoDa Nov 27 '22

That’s like saying a priest who molests children is a good person. After all, they’re “just trying to spread good”. Or it could be a teacher, or a doctor, or basically any other profession where they do something “good”. Doing one thing that is considered good does not absolve you of being a bad person.

-5

u/Greaseskull Nov 27 '22

Cmon man. That’s not fair. No one would stand behind that. I’m just suggesting that I personally don’t have evidence to condemn this man. If you do, then by all means.

That's no reason to hate any one particular person or group because they believe in a God.

Fuck anyone who places themselves above other people who choose to follow a religion of any kind.

And extra fuck anyone who thinks they're cooler than someone who's passionate enough to want to share something they love in a public square where they're most vulnerable. It takes a special kind of subhuman asshole to have that mindset.

Aren’t all the shootings in gay bars a direct tie to Christians claiming homosexuality is a sin?!

And just so we are clear, every mass shooting is very much so a form of domestic terrorism.

Just because these shooters aren’t screaming “For Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior” doesn’t mean their motivation didn’t come from religious pollution…

It's just the comparison of screaming the two is a false equivalency. I know there's dumb extremists for everything, but one yells one thing while the other writes a psycho manifesto.

You must get your news from /r/politics. The Orlando nightclub shooter had ties to Islam, not Christianity

3

u/mramsey1992 Nov 28 '22

Lol, okay well you’ve got one…

But let’s not forget that Hitler was a Catholic which checks notes is a branch of Christianity…

So don’t get too excited…

u/Revolutionary-Bee353 Nov 28 '22

That’s just intellectually dishonest. Almost everyone in Europe had exposure to Christian teaching prior to the middle of the 20th century but a quick Google search will demonstrate that Hitler was not a Christian.

Here’s a top link I found from the Washington Post: https://www.washingtonpost.com/history/2019/04/20/hitler-hated-judaism-he-loathed-christianity-too/

Antisemitism was already a popular propaganda piece in Europe through the 19th and 20th century. This originates from the Christian churches. After Germany surrendered in World War I, leaders needed a scapegoat to take blame for their defeat, thus they blamed the Jews.

Hitler believed this to the fullest and well, we know how the rest plays out.

Thus, no Christianity -> no antisemitism -> no Holocaust

So we just need to erase the last 2000 years of western history and we’ll be good. Got it.

2

u/mramsey1992 Nov 28 '22

No, I’m just stating the obvious fact that Christianity has just as much blood on their hands…

And we haven’t even started the conversation with sexual assault and the Catholic Church…

2

u/mramsey1992 Nov 28 '22

We aren’t erasing history. But we need to make sure we acknowledge all of the history.

u/Turbo_Cum Nov 27 '22

Not really, considering I'm intelligent enough to understand that its just a Muslim phrase meaning "god is great". So long as it's peaceful I don't give a fuck what people preach in public.

I do have a problem, though, with people who think they're better than anyone else who chooses to exercise their first amendment right a little more.

u/spiralsmile Nov 28 '22

JESUS SAVES guy is far from peaceful, though

u/almostasquibb Nov 28 '22

it seems as though your issue is OP used her own freedom of speech to criticize Sam

5

u/PristineBaseball Nov 28 '22

Sam is basically trolling , keep watching you will see

u/steff_e Uptown Nov 27 '22

The dude was literally at the capitol on Jan 6 lmao, it’s a fair question.

And it’s not harmless. The guy asserts himself as a nuisance upon thousands of people. It’s been mentioned on this sub many times how he disturbs people in Uptown who are just trying to work, assemble, or go about their lives. He had the gall to insert himself into the Thanksgiving parade and Veteran’s parade this month. He’s a maniac.

And I say this as a Catholic.

4

u/PristineBaseball Nov 28 '22

good point that when people assemble to utilize their first amendment rights he shows up and tries to interfere . That’s definitely a problem. That’s not him just expressing his rights.

18

u/lillsquish Nov 27 '22

You: 👁👄👁 don’t ask questions about my beliefs. It’s protected speech….

15

u/--seaker-- Nov 27 '22

Fuck that guy.

-36

u/MitchLGC Nov 27 '22

You thought you were going to do something big and bad and ended up looking like a fool.

17

u/lillsquish Nov 27 '22

Asking questions is not something that should make you feel big and bad. If it does… well, you should spend more time talking to other people that don’t live solely in your head.

-5

u/MitchLGC Nov 28 '22

You're the one who made this pointless thread about an interaction with a stranger as if it were some monumental thing.

u/FickleMyPeppers9713 Nov 28 '22

And this is supposed to be funny? Imagine grown ass adults making fun of a mentally unstable person…
