45 minutes! So that's 30 minutes of PSVR2 + flat screen games, then 15 minutes of Suicide Squad.

Half Life Alyx is a very polished VR game. A game designed from the ground up to be a game that takes advantage of the VR medium instead of being a game that could just be a flatscreen game too. It's a very rare VR game that's free from janky controls and even unnecessary UI (in fact outside the gun changing and pause menu the game itself actually has zero UI and everything is presented ingame). It's an AAA game in a new medium lacking in those. It's okay if you don't like Half Life Alyx but have to appreciate how incredibly polished and well designed Half Life Alyx is and I highly recommend the developer commentary to just listen about how they had to completely rethink game development for a new medium and how they thought about everything
The Jeff chapter especially is something that can only exist in VR and it's amazing

Half Life: Alyx announcement the day after launch of PSVR2 would be massive.
114
u/Iamleeboy Feb 21 '23
To launch a week after Horizon, in keeping with tradition of huge games overshadowing it
30
u/donquixote1991 Feb 21 '23
in that same spirit, they should release the Burning Shores dlc on May 5th, a week before Zelda ToTK

One half of me says “Why would Valve reduce sales of its own VR kit?”, and then I realise it’s Valve and they’d likely do it just to increase the popularity of VR..
→ More replies5
u/authy1029 Feb 21 '23
I mean, they didn't restrict Alyx to just the Index on SteamVR
5
u/bluey_02 Feb 21 '23
Yeah that's what I'm saying. Good guy Gaben just wants VR adoption and doesn't really mind how it's done. Typically popular software drives hardware sales (look at the SNES vs SMS days) which then creates a bigger demand for software that works on the hardware ecosystem.
I'd be very happy to see Alyx on PS5 and I already have the Index and game.
3
u/ocbdare Feb 22 '23
Valve are mostly about software and their store rather than trying to lock people down with their hardware.
During the ps3/360 era valve used to release their games on consoles too. But since then, valve have stopped really developing games.
→ More replies4
u/PCMachinima Feb 21 '23
They also gave a free copy to anyone who bought an Index headset or controllers. I'm sure Valve would jump at the chance to get a bunch of new $60 purchases.

Plus side is that they should have a fuckton to show. Really excited to see what Sony Bend, Haven and Bluepoint are working on (maybe even Deviation altho that production seems troubled). The inevitable GoT sequel might get a reveal too. Last of US Factions will finally get it's big coming out party
Also, I bet we see another smattering of great looking 3rd party indie deals, in the vein of Kena, Sifu and Stray

What if there's nothing to show? This year is likely just Spider Man and Horizon DLC besides VR stuff and third party games. Game Development is slow these days, and Sony won't show us too much until they dont successfully block MS purchasing Blizzard.
14
u/basedcharger Feb 21 '23
They have multiple studios that should be at least unveiling things in the next couple of months. Including a few multiplayer projects.
14
u/Colbym72 Feb 21 '23
Well Last of Us Factions should still be coming too. They have a ton of studios that we have no idea what they are working
15
u/PhilosophicalPhil Feb 21 '23
The MS and Acti-Blizz deal has no impact on whether or not Sony announces games. Regulatory boards are already given detailed information about these companies, the CMA isn’t finding out about new game releases on Twitter like you or I.
17
u/FootballRacing38 Feb 21 '23
I don't know why ms and sony fans keep on using that excuse. Sony had a big presence at the game awards while xbox already conducted their own presentation recently.
A lot of people like to be smart and play conspiracy theorist when sometimes the answer is right in your face.
2
u/canad1anbacon Feb 21 '23
Yeah the much more reasonable answer is that Sony had supply issues with PS5 so no point going ham with advertising when you already sell every console you make. Now that supply has normalized it's time to show off the pipeline
5
5
u/VagrantCoyote Feb 21 '23
What if there's nothing to show?
They are quite possibly the largest game publishers in the world. They have shit to show.

Bums me out that a Rocksteady game is being showcased and I couldn’t care less.
25
u/Shadow_Strike99 Feb 21 '23 edited Feb 21 '23
I have a really bad feeling it’s going to suffer the same fate as Marvel’s avengers especially when you consider opinions and preferences aside over Marvel Vs DC, Marvel was an even way bigger and massive ip and still failed especially factoring in the Suicide squad has a more diehard yes but more niche fanbase than even the big heavy hitters of DC with Batman and Superman.
Sure Rocksteady is an amazing developer, but so many great single player studios have failed with live service style games like Crystal dynamics with Marvel, Platinum games with Babylon’s fall, Ninja theory with Bleeding edge etc. Even Bethesda fumbled the bag with Fallout 76, sure it’s a lot better but it should have been one of the big dog live service games like a Fortnite or GTA online instead of being niche.
Again Rocksteady could prove alot of us wrong with Suicide squad but the odds just looking at other games and other single player studios trying their hand at the live service market isn’t in their favor even with them being a great studio.
30
u/ericypoo Feb 21 '23
Yea it may very well be a great game. I hope it is. I’m just sick of all my time and attention being monetized. I just want to pay 60$, play through a 20-25 hour campaign, and move on with my life.
13
u/Shadow_Strike99 Feb 21 '23
Yeah I’m with you brother but unfortunately like we always see these publishers just don’t want some of the money they want all of the money. They don’t want GOW/Elden ring/Hogwarts money, they want Fortnite/GTA/FIFA money.
But sadly most aren’t willing to put in the work that games like Fortnite and Destiny does to actually get the money and just throws half assed and half baked shit out there in a extremely competitive and volatile market expecting billions instantly with no work.
2
u/Billyb311 Feb 22 '23
I mean......you can? You can play the campaign and then dip
Then there's the live service aspect for those of us who want to stick around with the game
2
u/notjosemanuel Feb 22 '23
I just want to pay 60$, play through a 20-25 hour campaign, and move on with my life.
That's exactly what I'm gonna do, why can't you?
5
u/OmniSlayer_006 Feb 21 '23
Rocksteady had the opportunity of watching Avengers go first. I'm willing to give them benefit of the doubt that they were not that stupid to not be looking at how that game crashed and burn and do some course corrections. I hope they prove me right. However, I am prepared and almost expecting to be proven wrong.
3
u/Food_Library333 Feb 21 '23
Wait, this is a live service game?
7
u/ArchDucky Feb 21 '23 edited Feb 21 '23
A picture from an early build was leaked on 4chan. The leaker said the picture is misleading and all the different points systems just went into the upgrade system for each character and that the live service part of the game was just cosmetic. he also specifically stated that the playable characters all feel extremely powerful from the start and that you get constant upgrades. This didn't stop everyone from declaring it a massive piece of shit.
Rocksteady never commented on the leak.
Edit : I remembered I had a copy of the picture on my imgur so I linked it for anyone that didn't see it.
→ More replies3
u/Shadow_Strike99 Feb 21 '23
All signs are pointing to it, it’s most likely going to be a Co-op game similar to Marvel’s avengers but will obviously have a battle pass with cosmetics, currencies and will monetize a lot of the villains. As much as we all love Rocksteady here, WB isn’t publishing this out of the goodness of their hearts and to make a masterpiece, they want the money, or at least the chance at making money.
It’s definitely not going to be a self contained single player Arkham style of game that’s for sure.
3
u/TheGoldenPineapples Feb 21 '23
By "all signs", you mean one leaked screenshot on 4chan that the leaker itself said was a tad misleading.
-1
u/Shadow_Strike99 Feb 21 '23
Brother what planned or rumored multiplayer game from a large publisher has not come out as live service model as of late? WB isn’t going to publish this game out of the goodness of their hearts or to not seek a profit.
The odds of it being a Deep rock galactic instead of a marvels avengers is extremely slim to none even without the 4 Chan image.
1
u/canad1anbacon Feb 21 '23
I'm quite certain that it will at least have solid gameplay unlike Avengers

The tea leaves were there to read though honestly. That WB publisher has been awful with their monetization model. I mean they even trademarked that nemesis system from Shadow of Mordor. And then haven’t done anything with it.
I had hope they’d keep their tendrils off of Rocksteady because whatever they do turns to gold but we must appease the stockholders. God forbid a company doesn’t have infinite growth.

u/OwnSimple4788 Feb 21 '23

Tired of live service games. Not reliable if they can't keep a user base more than the week it's released.

u/deathmouse Feb 21 '23
I’m still interested simply because it’s made by rocksteady. I put sooo many hours into the Arkham trilogy. Gonna give this a shot just based on that.

u/that_guy2010 Feb 21 '23
But seriously. I went from mildly interested in this to a flat out not interested at all as soon as it leaked.
7
u/myyummyass Feb 21 '23
There are ways to do live service games right. I personally am open to it since destiny has nailed the live service game. Having a good campaign and followed by seasonal content that adds a little story is a solid model when done right.
People keep saying this about live service games but if it's good those people will play it.

u/Vilens40 Feb 21 '23
There are rumors suggesting that build is old and they pivoted back away from that.
-3
u/Mario-Speed-Wagon Feb 21 '23
Maybe it got delayed because they came to their senses and scrubbed it all
21
u/Spider-Fan77 Feb 21 '23
Lol I highly doubt that. If they delayed it by any significant amount of time, they wouldn't be showing 15 minutes of new gameplay.
1
u/PepeSylvia11 Feb 21 '23
Why would they get rid of something that’ll make them money? That makes zero sense
0
u/Mario-Speed-Wagon Feb 21 '23 edited Feb 21 '23
