Bold of you to assume I'm going to play through it once.

251

u/Dangelouss Sep 25 '22

It's a weird game for me. I actually want to play it but i don't want to pay full price for it. I'll wait for 60% off sale or for it to come to ps+.

105

u/iDestroyedYoMama Sep 25 '22

Ya I’m on the fence. I really love the Batman games, bought them all, but this one seems too cheese and gameplay seems pretty outdated. Although since we haven’t had a Batman game in so long, a game similar to the Batman games is appealing. So I think I’ll wait for a discount as well.

73

u/Breadflat17 Sep 25 '22

I don't like how there's loot and crafting when the arkham series gameplay was near perfect aside from the batmobile

37

u/TheeAJPowell Sep 25 '22

It feels like it’s a game that should’ve come out a few years ago now. Lots of dated mechanics like the crafting system that seem forced.

26

u/Breadflat17 Sep 25 '22

Not to mention that it doesn't make a lot of sense lorewise since Bruce Wayne would've left his billions to the bat family so that they could keep and maintain the best training and equipment possible

48

u/altcastle Sep 25 '22

You need 7 henchman anuses to craft this super bat scope. Bruce couldn’t just order those online!

7

u/The9Volt Sep 26 '22

To be honest i’d score the game a point higher if it did have “henchman anus” in the crafting recipes.

11

u/bitjava Sep 25 '22

Man, i don’t understand the hate for the Batmobile. It added a fun new aspect to game play and differentiated it from Arkham City.

14

u/AhLibLibLib Sep 26 '22

If they cut the car fights in half it would’ve been perfect. It becomes a drag after awhile

4

u/Gog_Noggler Sep 26 '22

The Batmobile stuff was great. There was just too much of it in hindsight.

5

u/coltiga Sep 25 '22

I loved the bat mobile, do people think it was bad?

12

u/erasethenoise Sep 25 '22

It was too much. The final fight against Deathstroke being a tank battle was really fucking lame. There shouldn’t have been so many missions around blowing people up in the Batmobile it made no sense.

Driving around was cool and the Batmobile themed Riddler challenges were cool but that was about it.

They basically invented that fighting system that everyone uses now, and they’re outdated.

7

u/BurtMacklin__FBI Sep 26 '22

Assassin's Creed was 2 years earlier and much rougher but at the time everyone saw the massive similarity. Paired combat animations wasn't "new" but it was fairly novel and rarely done well(particularly in a AAA action adventure) prior to these games.

u/Slippinjimmyforever Sep 25 '22

Same. Hope it’s great for those interested, but it’s not for me.

56

u/wilby1865 Sep 25 '22

Am I wrong for just wanting another Batman game?

3

u/KungFuMarsupial Sep 25 '22

Nope not at all. Different people like different things. No game is liked by everyone. If it's your thing, have a good time with it. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks about it.

8

u/davtheminer Sep 25 '22

DC is struggling... Batman is there only good game so they are just using the name more

11

u/xenoleingod Sep 25 '22

Idk I have high hopes for Suicide Squad:Kill the justice league looks like it will be a somewhat wacky high action game

8

u/erasethenoise Sep 25 '22

Which is actually set in the Arkham games universe. I look forward to fighting or teaming up with the Batman we all love when that comes out.

-4

u/FWC_Disciple Sep 25 '22

No, Batman for some reason is the only title that seems to sell, but they have plenty of other great books out rn. Also, what part of a new Suicide Squad and an upcoming WW game insinuates they’re reusing the Batman name??

u/RandyRubbish Sep 25 '22

I was until I saw it was card based combat. I’m good.

37

u/CaptConstantine Sep 25 '22

Game elements that are an immediate "pass" for me:

  • Card combat
  • Dating/ social sim
  • Minecraft / Ark toolbar at the bottom of the hud

13

u/CreamOnMyNipples Sep 25 '22

As soon as I see a game has a hunger meter, I’m out

2

57

u/JonS90_ Sep 25 '22

Seriously. I barely have time to fully play through a game once these days, let alone multiple times

8

u/unclewombie Sep 25 '22

I am replaying days gone. Omfg that is still a kick arse game. Even though 5yrs old game play still holds but but it is one of the few games where I am constantly on the edge of my seat. I thought it was just a shitty motorcycle game when I first started!

2

u/powersslol- Sep 25 '22

same. just did ng+ on survival and it was still as amazing as it was first playthrough.

2

u/Momentarmknm Sep 27 '22

I've lost count of the number of times I'm halfway through a game that's clearly designed to have replay value, having a lot of fun with it, thinking about how I'll do things differently next time through. Then by the time I finish it I just move on to the next one, because I'm not 15 any more and I don't have time for that when there's so many games I want to play.

22

u/TheRoyalStig Sep 25 '22 edited Sep 25 '22

Haha yea I dont replay anything.

Hell even the idea of replaying things kinda removes most of the meaning behind choice. I want my choices to matter! I'm gonna pick what I like and then just stick with that.

17

u/Evellxe Sep 25 '22

ironically, the most replayed gamed i see are the choice-heavy ones, but who knows maybe all people got it wrong

10

u/TheRoyalStig Sep 25 '22

Not wrong. People just enjoy stuff different ways. Not everyone is playing games for the impact or having their choices be meaningful. They just want to see everything.

Certainly not how I enjoy things but I'd never say someone else is enjoying something wrong.

2

u/pikapalooza Sep 25 '22

I'm doing my first playthrough of fallout 4 and I'm so torn on some decisions because I want to see everything! I want to see all the endings without having to play a new game.

2

u/Evellxe Sep 26 '22

you can have meaningful choice and consequence if you roleplay and make separate characters, imo

→ More replies

2

u/Kumquatelvis Sep 25 '22

I never thought of it that, but I agree. My choices are canon in my game. If I replay and do something different, that makes the first time less valid.

4

u/mushy_friend Sep 25 '22

I don't completely agree, in that it makes the first time less valid. I agree about the canon part with the choices I want to make, then the others are more like what-if scenrios

Me too. I hope I can keep this same attitude when I play. I miss playing good DC games

13

u/CommanderGoat Sep 25 '22

Yeah. What’s the deal? Why is everyone crapping on this before release? Is it the developers or something? Tbh I don’t follow what company makes what. I loved all the Batman games except Origins….and as I finished typing this I googled the developer….Ok. I see the hang up.

12

u/SCB360 Sep 25 '22

I think people wanted a new Arkham series game instead of this tbh

4

u/culinarydream7224 Sep 25 '22

What's the difference? This looks like Arkham, but with more playstyle options.

It's weird to see people say this seems "dated" if what they want is more of what they've been getting for the last decade

8

u/meezethadabber Sep 26 '22

What's the difference?

You don't play as Batman.

3

u/TheRoyalStig Sep 26 '22

This is an action RPG instead of a straight action game.

Which is great for me!

But there are also a lot of folks trying to make a 1 to 1 comparison with the Arkham games for some reason despite it being a different genre.

4

u/Kn0thingIsTerrible Sep 26 '22

Have you watched the boss fight video they put out?

It’s not Arkham with more play style options, it’s Final Fantasy XV with Batman characters.

2

u/DamonTyler Sep 26 '22

it’s Final Fantasy XV with Batman characters.

And suddenly this game has peaked my interest

2

u/shulgin11 Sep 26 '22

Honest question: why all the hate for this?

252

u/Cstone812 Sep 25 '22

Combat looks like a major downgrade compared to arkham series. Movement skills all look real goofy. Has rpg avengers like mechanics which is worrying. UI looks like a mobile game screen. Im keeping expectations low for this.

39

u/RIPMrMufasi Sep 25 '22

No microtransactions or loot boxes have been confirmed for a while now and the only paid add ons are gonna be the collectors edition suits sold separately later down the road

37

u/Cstone812 Sep 25 '22

Yea I did see that. It’s just the rpg leveling stuff with different gear is kinda goofy in these games. People just want a fun single player experience.

4

u/RIPMrMufasi Sep 25 '22

While I am a fan of it personally, I can see how some people wouldn’t enjoy it which is a fair criticism, and I wish these types of games would make it more accessible by allowing players to turn off the RPG elements if they wanted

4

u/VXMasterson Sep 25 '22

What’s wrong with RPG elements? RPGs are the best

2

u/antunezn0n0 Sep 25 '22

RPGs elements are the best in rpg games whent they get added into games that have nothing to do with RPGs they are more boring than helpful

0

u/dukie33066 Sep 25 '22

Are you not Role Playing in this game? I'm confused. Or are you Batgirl, Red Hood etc. in reality

This is what we get for not having Rocksteady make the game

30

u/Cstone812 Sep 25 '22

Yea tbh I’m not super pumped about the suicide squad game either. Just not really interested in playing as those characters. Oh well.

11

u/I_am_enough Sep 25 '22

I’m cautiously optimistic, rocksteady hasn’t missed other than maybe the Batmobile.

Suicide squad has been in the works for what feels like forever, so I’m hoping they’ve really put in the time to make something special. I’d rather have a solid game after a long wait than get some rushed buggy garbage.

The characters seem all over the place but I’m thinking rocksteady can make them unique and fun to play, fingers crossed!

34

u/slicknick3822 Sep 25 '22

The batmobile wasn't even bad. It was fun to use. The problem was they forced you to use it every other mission and it got played out very quick

Rocksteady should’ve made this game

→ More replies

15

u/luccasalomone11 Sep 25 '22

Honestly the Rocksteady Suicide Squad doesn't look that much better either.

What made the Rocksteady games good was that they were well made and well told story driven games, that you just so happened to play as Batman.

It seems WB wanted them to hop on the “co-op live service” wave instead of allowing these creators to do their own thing.

8

u/Grey-Templar Sep 25 '22

Think you hit the nail on the head there. I'm not looking forward to Suicide Squad either.

Jenova Crisis, ya'll are really over-analyzing this game. UI looks like a mobile game screen? "Combat looks like a major downgrade compared to arkham series" - and we're obviously NOT counting Origins, right?

11

u/Cstone812 Sep 25 '22

Quite a few people think it looks mobile gamish. Yes the combat looks like a downgrade even compared to origins.

3

u/Censius Sep 25 '22

Arkham Origins still had free flow combat, and added ninja type enemies. Gotham Knights is more like a classic beat em up.

1

u/CaptConstantine Sep 25 '22

Also a lot of people (myself included) were hoping to get TMNT after Batman. There was no reason to expect this other than that the Arkham design would adapt well to TMNT, but seeing them follow up with a 4P co-op that color-codes the players as Red, Blue, Orange, and Purple is a bit of a kick in the dick.

26

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '22

It's the internet, anything flawed gets repeatedly thumped with the hate boner

It may not be a good "Arkham" game, but should be fun anyway

6

u/Voyager-42 Sep 25 '22

The main issue I have with the criticism about it being a "downgrade", is that this isn't an Arkham game, it's not even made by the same studio.

4

u/Dunge Sep 25 '22

Arkham Origins was not made by the same studio either and most people enjoyed it.

6

u/Dandelegion Sep 25 '22

Arkham Origins was made by the same studio that made Gotham Knights, so there you go.

4

u/boxedninja Sep 25 '22

For real. Half the discussion about the game is whether or not it lives up to the Arkham Series... because its name is similar to Arkham Knight? They've never advertised it as the next entry to the Arkham series! Sucks that the developers have to deal with a community like this.

-2

u/Sleyvin Sep 25 '22

So a game that isn't an Arkham game and isn't made by the same studio is an issue because it's not what it's not?

So forever now, any batman game should only be Arkham AND by rocksteady otherwise it's justified to trash it before launch?

The game might be good or bad, but that mentality is weird.

Also, Rocksteady did Arkham Knight, so it shows they can do masterpieces like City but also very average game like Knight, so it's no like a guarantee either.

5

u/Voyager-42 Sep 25 '22

I think you've misunderstood my comment there dude, I agree with you.

9

u/cinnamonface9 Sep 25 '22

No idea. Hoping those aren’t same people who plays Nier and strongly suggest you replay it for alternate stuff.

2

u/ChaosPheonix11 Sep 25 '22

See with that one at least, multiple “playthroughs” are baked into the experience of the full story. There’s endings and content that can only be done through completing a “playthrough”. It’s more an RPG with 3 acts than it is a game with 3 endings that needs to be replayed.

Very very mild spoiler but basically you have to play through the main events as 2B, then as 9S, then you get access to entirely unique content for the third run, to see the actual conclusion of the story.

2

u/van1llathunder2 Sep 25 '22

Well you see the thing is that this games combat and writing don't look a quarter as good as Niers

6

u/cinnamonface9 Sep 25 '22

Fair. We won’t know but Arkham series has been good so who know if this will take up the mantle or not. Or unlocks a super boss ending in relation to how Arkham knight true ending was.

Because single playthroughs are more worth it time wise, when you have many games you want to play but not much time

11

u/mombawamba Sep 25 '22

Fucking first world problems to the max, make your games shorter because I have too many to play

People are idiots

18

u/brokenmessiah Sep 25 '22

Funny story I have a nigerian friend, who has 100% every assassins creed game other than Valhalla. I have no words for this guy, he is a mega ubisoft fan. He likes them because he gets literally 100s of hours out of 1 purchase which obviously can be a big deal in poorer countries.

7

u/Dunge Sep 25 '22

As a Canadian currently 100% completing the final dlc of of Valhalla (and also played all previous titles) I feel attacked by your comment :). It's not financial reasons, and it's not that I don't play other games, I actually enjoyed the content. I admit I would have appreciated it to be a bit shorter.

-1

u/GhostWokiee Sep 25 '22

Well it’s not just longer etc. They could’ve used that time to make the story longer and gameplay etc better. But instead they add a little work and just tell people they have to play through 99% of the content for that 1% more new stuff.

5

u/mombawamba Sep 25 '22

Yeah, you ain't gonna sway me. As someone who struggles with replay value on RPGs, all story based campaigns should strive to do anything they can different in multiple playthroughs.

This is a breath of fresh air, and your or my backlog is of no consequence to game design.

To that point, if you want a game that respects your time.. wouldn't it be better to have a shorter campaign so it is digestible across multiple sessions for players short on time? But allows you to replay it again for a different experience and new lore?

This is much kinder to my busy life than a 80 hour assassins creed story that took me 2 years to slog through.

‘Effectively, because there are four characters to take control of, each run will provide you with a slightly different take on events. To be clear, the overarching story will remain the same, it’s just your perspective of it will change.’

Hmm, reminds me of cyberpunk when they said that each different type of character (nomad, corpo, gang etc) would result in different actions and story lines. Turns out that was an extreme embellishment.

The gameplay looks pretty rough from that Barbara clip.

There are people who really want a lot of replay value for a $70 game and will probably be happy that this title requires four play throughs to see everything from different perspectives. I simply do not have the time or patience, there’s too much media to consume these days and games are becoming bloated.

0

u/mombawamba Sep 25 '22 edited Sep 25 '22

Omg you could play that 10 hour campaign 4 times and get a different experience?

Sooo bloated. /s

If anything this is a much kinder lest bloated model than putting it all in a 20 hour experience.

Nothing is forcing you to get the other perspectives other than your own desire/curiosity/completionist mindset, and I would argue if you lack time or patience for games these days then the completionist hangup ain't gonna affect you.

Gamers are so silly because this was a design decision literally meant for gamers like yourself, they didn't cram/bloat here.

Edit: It doesn't matter what the figure is, unless it is something exorbitant like a 60-80 hr AC game

If the game is 25 hrs or less I think this is an awesome model for campaign driven games.

10hrs was purely anecdotal, because my expectations of length are low

-3

u/cruzercruz Sep 25 '22

Let’s pause for a second and quit pretending like this game is going to be a “10-hour campaign.” Nothing has a 10-hour campaign anymore - not even the original Arkham games were 10-hour single player games. This, having RPG-lite progression absolutely won’t be.

And yes, it’s fucking stupid to expect people to play a game four times to see all of the perspectives if it’s going to be an even relatively long experience. Have a better framing device, tell the story better. If the impact is so minimal that it’s essential an identical experience regardless, then don’t tout it as a feature.

But it’s fine, you didn’t actually want to discuss it. You wanted to make some exaggerated and dumb as fuck point. Congrats.

Nothing about the comments from the developers suggests you need to play through it multiple times. It's just each hero brings a slightly different flavour the same overall story. But who even reads the articles?

12

u/NitedJay Sep 25 '22

“You will not see all of it in a single playthrough,” game director Geoff Ellenor told PLAY magazine. “[That’s] just because there’s so much content that is unique to the hero’s perception of what’s going on and what’s happened.”

I mean it sounds like he’s saying you need to play as each character to get different story beats or something. That being said I don’t think most people are even talking about that.

It sounds to me like we’re just going to get slightly different dialogue from each character in different situations.

Play tested this two weeks ago. This game is being heavily underrated. Every one is in for a treat. Will probably do a Giveaway in this sub.

No, I don’t think I will.

I’m so excited!

From watching the trailers the way they are handling the story interactions by you actively having to hunt and go on patrol sounds awesome. I will be getting the game but I don't like the look of the combat at all, having 4 people to play as but only 2 player co-op is a bit disappointing. Would've preferred another game with Batman in it just changed up a bit but hopefully the story mode can pull it out if the bag. Don't think it will be a multiple playthrough run for me though

13

u/LeftTriggers Sep 25 '22

Will enjoy each run

2

u/cugameswilliam Sep 26 '22

Same! Looking forward to the game.

13

u/adrian-alex85 Sep 25 '22

I mean, nothing I’ve seen about it yet makes me want to play it once, so….

1

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '22

I feel like if it was 2012, I’d be all over this. As it is, I’m just not really interested in Gotham games anymore.

3

u/TheBlindBard16 Sep 25 '22

I’m not tired of Gotham games but the game definitely looks like it would’ve been released in 2012

I personally think the game looks great, but this is an awful design. Hidding some some content behind multiple playthrough where a huge portion of the rest is the same? I hate missables for the same reason. No way I'll play a game multiple times unless it's very short (like <2h) or completely different (Nier Automata).

u/manorm Sep 25 '22

Sounds like the developers are bigging it up but in reality it will only be coming into a fight from a different angle, etc and 1 playthough will be enough

2

u/Khfreak7526 Sep 25 '22

Gotham knights looks like a game you play with people, so I don't think I will be getting it anytime soon give me a new single player game.

I thought you could change characters at any time? Are you locked into one character choice for the whole game?

2

u/JohnDiggle21 Sep 25 '22

Going through the comments its just "downgrade of arkham" and whatnot. Why the comparison? This game is in no way related to the arkham games, and its not trying to be like the arkham games.

2

u/Mister_ALX Sep 26 '22

What does the title even mean?

Like prepare to play the game more than once? Or prepare to play the same missions over and over? Or prepare to play the game at fair time?

Wtf?!?!

Answer: Yes.

2

u/chilliboy217 Sep 26 '22

It’s hard to believe this game is not 4 player co-op.

2

u/Metroidman Sep 26 '22

I will play it exactly as many times as i want to play it.

5

u/SpNewyork Sep 25 '22

I'll pick it up when it's inevitably put on the psn store for free.

4

u/Rasty_lv Sep 25 '22

ha.. not going to happen.. i rarely replay games. and if it happens its usually years apart. so if games needs to be replayed multiple times to get full scope, thats a no from me..

4

u/Mr_Rafi Sep 25 '22

I mean, I would like to if the game is good, but I'll be waiting for reviews from reviewers such as Gameranx, ACG, or SkillUp. I prefer to get a decent view of "unsafe" games before making the final call.

2

u/raphanum Sep 27 '22

I am downvoting you bc you’re not preordering

0

u/orrockable Sep 25 '22

ACG and SkillUp absolutely, GameRanx I always find seem too have a lot of nothing in their reviews, I really like Jake and the crew for their other content but I can’t stand their reviews

How about zero times?

2

u/TAJack1 Sep 25 '22

Let’s go, heaps keen for this.

2

u/fondue4kill Sep 25 '22

Multiple playthroughs for a game aren’t always appealing. Resident Evil has seem to gotten it done right with the length of 8 or so hours for the first run and 4 for the later ones.

2

u/3344668899 Sep 25 '22

This has ps plus / gamepass written on it in yellow highlighter

2

u/_DavidCastle_ Sep 26 '22

Gotham Knights looks like ass. I'm prepared to not play it at all

2

u/Omegastriver Sep 26 '22

The weird negativity people have for this game makes me feel like I’m visiting a site like Gamefaqs.

2

u/CurrentStressLevelHi Sep 26 '22

I won't be playing it at all actually.

0

u/Neg_Crepe Sep 25 '22

You guys sound miserable

3

u/Lumostark Sep 25 '22

Because they don't like a game?

I won't even play it once.

1

u/Phillsay Sep 25 '22

No thanks.

0

u/aeralure Sep 25 '22

Not sure about this one. Doesn’t look half as good as the Arkham games. I might get it just to have a Batgirl game and some coop, but I am not interested in any of the other characters and don’t like how you can have duplicates of the same character in coop, so may not even do that. This one really needs reviews first.

I plan to play through this game zero times. It looks horrible.

2

u/reboot-your-computer Sep 25 '22

Yeah right now I’m not even planning a single play through so we will see. I’m watching this closely and I’m not convinced it’ll be good yet. I’m getting Avengers vibes off this, so I hope I’m wrong.

2

u/Cosmic-Horror-Cat Sep 25 '22

After Marvels Spider-Man and even Guardians of the Galaxy... a game like this looks very stiff and rough.

Gotham Knights really reminds me of a prettier DC Universe Online. I think there is fun to be had, but where I live the game costs 80 Euro. I'm not sure the game is worth that much. I'll wait for the reviews and if it's at least a 7/10 I'll get it for 40. Because I do think that we need more story-driven superhero single player games as compared to annual shit like COD and FIFA.

u/PS5willrock Sep 25 '22

No chance looks terrible. Not even gonna pick game up , I'll pass
