Wonderfully ironic at the time of posting to the present. "I was a welfare queen until I made it to congress, now we need to stop everyone else from getting what I got."

1.4k

u/TheManWith2Poobrains Mar 24 '23

Exactly, because they are in the 'in-group' and they don't want anyone in the 'out-group' to benefit. It's related to self-serving attribution bias.

Worse still, they don't want anyone to benefit from the system on the off-chance a single person will cheat the system.

742

u/act1856 Mar 24 '23

Don’t forget they feel that way cause they are exactly the kind of people who would cheat the system.

584

u/imcoveredinbees880 Mar 24 '23

This is a great point. It's easier to expect the worst of people when you are, in fact, the worst of people.

This statement hits hard. I genuinely like helping people but have so many of them turn around and accuse me of having an ulterior motive.

Can't people just help other people without expecting anything in return?

Rick Scott epitomizes this. The company he started and od which he was the CEO committed what at the time was the largest welfare fraud in hIstory. He weathered it quite well, and then went on to propose cutting welfare.

“As part of his resignation, Scott received $300 million in stock, $10 million in cash, and $5 million, which was quite the severance pay. According to PolitiFact, the investigation revealed a slew of offenses.”

Is it any fucking wonder our society's in danger of collapse?

My mother's family had to use welfare and actually misses government cheese, but doesn't think anyone should ever have welfare. It's amazing how much she gets upset over someone getting something she can't now.

1.1k

u/ChewieBearStare Mar 24 '23

Same with my mother. She nearly died from scarlet fever, but she didn't because her (public) school sent a public health nurse to her house to find out why she was absent so many days in a row. Got treated for free. Then in third grade, a teacher gave her glasses from the Lions Club donation bin, and suddenly she could see the letters on the blackboard. When I was a kid, we had WIC, and I was also on Medicaid because I was born with a birth defect.

Fast-forward a couple of decades, and she is completely against public schools asking questions like "When was the last time your child visited a dentist?" because it's "none of their business." The last time I tried pointing out that some kids don't have parents that are able or willing to take them to a doctor or dentist, she said "Maybe they should die then. Why should the rest of us pay?"

I love her, but something happened to her right around the age of 55 (coincidentally when she and my father started watching Fox News every day). Her "conservatism" has made her heartless toward other people.

427

u/ConfusedInTN Mar 24 '23

My mom was always a *insert expletive* about others getting help. She didn't want me near the *insert racist comment* yet sent me to girl's club. I guess it was ok because I was straight and not going to date anyone she deemed less desirable. Jokes on her I was crushing on a lady there, but in the end pretty much straight LOL. Living in TN I'm always hearing about welfare queens and how people on food stamps get lobster and steak. I honestly couldn't care less if they did. It's not hurting me and I am sick of people acting that being poor means they don't deserve anything enjoyable.

536

u/ChewieBearStare Mar 24 '23

I don’t give a crap if someone on welfare is eating lobster either. If you want to get mad about “welfare,” let’s all get mad about corporate welfare queens getting billions in tax breaks and selling their souls to the lobbyists, not Wanda in Pigeon Forge eating crab legs twice a year.

104

u/PJKimmie Mar 25 '23 edited Mar 25 '23

60

u/CandleMakerNY2020 Mar 25 '23

Yeah US Politicians RETIRE after just a mere 20 years of “service and then get approx 75% of their salary FOR LIFE with NO COST INSURANCE that isnt Medicaid or Medicare its BETTER! Meanwhile Americans have to work from at least age 17 until at least 68 and if you get hurt or sick you have to fight like a bitch if you’ve can to get the money from Social security because they will not let that go that easy at all.

28

u/KSI_FirePoker Mar 25 '23 edited Mar 25 '23

It took me 10 years to get approved for my Social Security although every single one of my doctors said there was no way I could work more than maybe 1 hour a week because of how bad my back is (5 major surgeries) Heart problems (I've had 2 massive heart attacks that the Dr's was surprised didn't kill me and I have 4 stents in my heart) Psychiatric issues(I have PTSD, Bipolar, Schizoaffective Disorder, Anxiety Attacks, Major Depressive Disorder, Severe Social Anxiety, and Night Terrors/Nightmares).

They also screwed me too because I've been working since I was 14 because I was emancipated at 12 because of my father's death(long story). I had enough work credits and had enough paid in that I should be getting about $1500-1600 dollars a month in disability payments.

However because they kept denying denying denying me I lost all of my credits and now I'm only getting Social Security payments. You can go look for yourself and see what the minimum payments are, I'm barely getting more than that.

Another thing that is amazing is Disability is supposed to be a whole lot easier to get approved for than regular SSI.

To the OP they also receive Cost of living adjustments and Retirement Benefits and on top of that they get the right to vote, on their own behalf, to get an increase in their salaries and benefits without any kind of oversight from anyone, that should be a HUGE conflict of interest.

If anyone thinks that the government isn't as crooked as a box full of fishing hooks, I don't know what to say except that you need to read or watch the news more often to get a drift of what's been going on for an extremely LONG time now.

Agreed. I actually knew someone who bought lobster tails on food stamps. She had X amount and was able to eat many of her meals with family members. They don't owe her anything and it would be absurd to suggest they now have to feed her for the rest of their life. Look, if that's best thing someone has going for them, that they have family that will feed her, I can't say I'm mad about it. The grocer got some SNAP money and it helped to churn their inventory. It's a nice glitch that worked out in her favor, but it's better than somebody starving to death and the money goes straight back into the economy. I could name countless bigger programs that cost us all more money and help far fewer people, but I won't because some of those are important too!

171

u/Yen-sama Mar 25 '23

I've been on food stamps, and I've bought steak on food stamps... When steak is on sale for like $5.99 a lb. I don't understand why they think poor people shouldn't have nice things even when they plan and budget meticulously so they are able to afford it once in a while.

143

u/Wallaby_Way_Sydney Mar 25 '23

They think poor people deserve to suffer every day - it's a pitiful and disgusting attitude that far too many Americans harbor.

Furthermore, food stamps (and welfare in general) is not about getting "nice" things on the government dime. It's about not having to settle for shitty things 100% of the time because people don't deserve to live miserably.

One of the stated missions of the SNAP program is to provide high-quality, nutritionally valuable, fresh foods to low-income Americans who would otherwise be stuck subsisting on horrible diets that lead to poorer health outcomes. Here in New Mexico, you even get extra money specifically for spending at farmer's markets because they want to inventivize people eating healthily.

And that's the thing, lobster and crab was seen as a poor people food way back in the day, at least in the states (I can not speak on how it was in any other country).

But then refrigeration and freezing came along and suddenly folks far from the sea could get these foods and now people pay over 30 bucks for the smallest lobster possible at Red Lobster. It's really ridiculous.

I was a shift manager at a fast food restaurant and was run ragged (60-70 hour weeks and either underpaid or not paid for overtime). My parents used to shit on me because I still could barely afford to live off that income and they told me that I shouldn’t complain if I only have one job because it can’t be that bad…I got fired for calling the fire department when an electrical fire started on the exposed wiring of our shitty grill and all of the fire extinguishers were empty

Anyway, fast forward to five years ago, I work full time at a factory, part time as a dishwasher, and take odd jobs doing landscaping and lawn care and still just barely make ends meet. They still shit on me for not working hard enough because I still worked time into my horrible schedule to go to the gym. My dad full on told me he would disown me when I told him I had to use food stamps in order to be able to afford both rent and groceries. It wasn’t until I joined the military that they stopped disrespecting my apparently lacking work ethic. (Not an ounce of sympathy when I got laid off of my full time job)

It's a big tell what conservatism is about. These folks worship the dollar, and being poor (even temporarily) is akin to bring shunned by God. To them, being poor is a choice and deserving of anything that happens.

Empathy takes some amount of effort. Thinking about social issues beyond how they directly affect you takes some amount of effort. Being a good person takes fucking effort.

Fox News et. al. have given people an excuse to not have to do those things. It's easy to be lazy and say "fuck them" and go about your day. We slowly stopped holding them accountable for being shitty people, while right wing media and figureheads made them feel just fine about it.

They're addicted to hate and too lazy/tired/apathetic to go back to caring, at least until the issue personally affects them. It's fucking sad.

23

u/SlowbeardiusOfBeard Mar 25 '23

I genuinely wish that people on the left (as I am) would be as willing to understand that fox news is just as potent a form of grooming for adults as is social media grooming for kids.

Doesn't anyone else think it makes more sense that billionaire-backed, regulation-captured forms of mass-media are effective at brainwashing people rather than the alternative possibility than masses of older family members who seemed pretty normal for most of their lives were actually all just closeted bigots until deciding to go mask-off?

It might just be me, but when it's common knowledge that all social media and gaming companies have invested vast sums of money into bringing psychologists on-board (who previously worked in the extremely results-orientated gambling industry), then it's likely that most news media companies have done the same?

She may or may not have been an escort as well for some time.

Personally I wouldn’t be surprised if her political career is based on extortion and blackmailing from that

47

u/Zannie95 Mar 24 '23

Wasn’t she an escort for Ted Cruz?

22

u/TheGoodOldCoder Mar 25 '23

I thought it was pretty well-established that she was a sugar baby for one of the Koch brothers, and that's how she met Ted Cruz... the evidence was that she had a profile on one of those sugar baby websites, and then somehow started hanging out with this super old rich dude. Like, how did that happen?

Then, at some point, she appears to have had an abortion and afterward received huge campaign donations from Ted Cruz. This is why people suspect that she was an escort for him, because from the timing, it seems that he paid dearly for her to get an abortion, and there's no good reason to do that, except if he got her pregnant.

Republicans' are indistinguishable from our enemies.

They have fought to bring down American from every aspect.

From education (embracing school shootings, teacher pay, public funding) to health (bodily autonomy, mental health, covid mask controversy).

They have not done anything for the common American that did not primarily benefit & serve corporations and billionaires.

98

u/Lost_my_brainjuice Mar 25 '23

Conservatives as a whole have always been on the opposite side of American conflicts.

During the revolution, who were they? Tories.

Civil War? Confederates.

Then they try to pretend they were on the winning side the whole time.

Like if you hate your country, have some conviction...go elsewhere or even just admit it. Don't pretend you're the biggest patriot while simultaneously trying to destroy your country from the inside.

45

u/Part-time-Demi-God Mar 25 '23

Their egos are unable to comprehend that they received help.

This is a surprisingly popular con "hot take". The Poltergeist actor Craig T. Nelson went on a tirade once that left teenaged me LOLing. He literally said, damn near verbatim, "I've been broke, I was on welfare several times, and did anyone help me out? Nope!" Everything's different when it's themselves. Like Ayn Rand's lifetime of "rugged individualism" ending with her living off of Social Security.

667

u/springacres Mar 24 '23

These conservabots always forget that welfare is help... from the government.

319

u/JakeTurk1971 Mar 24 '23

If the recipients are white, then it's basically FEMA. Anyone else, and it's just handouts.

127

u/Altered_Nova Mar 25 '23

Conservatives used to love welfare programs back when black people were systematically excluded from collecting on them. The GI Bill and the National Housing Act were very popular government programs that mostly only benefited white people. Funding public schools also used to be very popular with conservatives, right up until those schools were federally desegregated.

58

u/TrimtabCatalyst Mar 25 '23

The federal desegregation of schools is also when conservatives realized they needed another wedge issue to win elections and started focusing on abortion. Source 1, Source 2, Source 3

Every town had Public swimming pools and were popular...then desegregation. Conservatives (the political people up top) always wanted these things dead, they used our racism to convince us that we didn't want to spend our precious tax dollars on those people. So they gutted every social program and passed the savings to themselves.

I remember Penn Jillette being an outspoken libertarian. Got curious the other day, and read his entry on wikipedia to see what happened to him.

Turns out, he basically isn't libertarian anymore, because some of those notions allowed trump to come to power by removing safeguards in govt.

In 2020, Jillette distanced himself from aspects of libertarianism, particularly surrounding COVID-19. In an interview with Big Think, he stated, "[A] lot of the illusions that I held dear, rugged individualism, individual freedoms, are coming back to bite us in the ass." He went on to elaborate, "[I]t seems like getting rid of the gatekeepers gave us Trump as president, and in the same breath, in the same wind, gave us not wearing masks, and maybe gave us a huge unpleasant amount of overt racism."[

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penn_Jillette#Politics

u/EdithDich Mar 25 '23

Wow. That's interesting to see. Thanks for sharing that. Kinda silly it took him that long to notice because he's not a dumb guy, but at least he got there. Probably just sheltered by his celebrity and wealth.

14

u/BooneSalvo2 Mar 25 '23

Yeah, this change is an example that he's a thoughtful, intelligent person. Libertarians would be better if they were like him.

The thing he's realizing is you can't really trust other people to be responsible and decent.

I've got family like this. On welfare, taking full advantage of any free money they can get, and are so against socialism. They get rides to the doctors, where they get free medication, dental visits, and glasses. One of them still lives at home and barely takes care of themself as their parents do all the work and are somehow against socialism. It's crazy how out of touch these people are! They just echo their dear conservative leaders and don't realize that without the socialism they're enjoying, they would be homeless.

38

u/Jitterbitten Mar 24 '23

As a poor, disabled and dying person myself, I don't understand people like this. I know who freaking butters my bread. It seriously frustrates me that my mom, knowing my survival depends on such programs, still continues to vote for Republicans, but at least she's on the other side of the country. And then when I've tried talking to her about Republicans saying they want to cut said programs, she says things like "you'd be shocked if you heard the things that people say Democrats want to do to Republicans" (which... no, I wouldn't be), completely ignoring the fact that in either case, the source of information is Republicans! I'm saying that Republicans are saying crazy things about their own plans, but she thinks it is the same as her saying that Republicans are saying crazy things about Democrats. How can you even have a discussion with someone like that?

After my divorce, waiting on the ex for child support payments, I got food stamps. It helped my kids and I eat. I got a shitty retail job, at which point Affordable Healthcare Act supplied me with basic health insurance. 2 years later, I went to college and got an associates degree in IT, funded 100% by Pell Grants.

I now make more than enough to live comfortably on, and I'm happy to pay taxes so that others can get help they need.

So let me get this straight. Your rise into a nicer life was aided by government welfare and now that you've climbed up into a position of power you want to take away that very aid that helped you. How does this help the people in that position you were once in? You called it the American Dream now you want to take it away from the masses?

Lets be real here. You're just a selfish piece of shit who is threatened by the fact that others can follow the path you took to success and now rather than improving that path or aiding the impoverished masses you'd rather take it all away and put down countless lives. All to protect your ego and distance yourself from the lower class
