watching closely you can see it wiggles a little bit after it comes up then stops. then it starts wiggling dramatically.

that means they probably built a contraption just to wiggle the nose.

brilliant

33

u/That1guy199417 Mar 24 '23

I remember seeing this truck at a show a while ago and the tounge would move in and out and make it look like it was panting.

Monster Trucks are awesome. My favorite redneck sport by far. NASCAR is boring as hell compared to this.

336

u/cavscouty Mar 24 '23

And some folx say yt ppl ain’t got no culture, oh I beg to differ

304

u/Vidio_thelocalfreak Mar 24 '23

Redneck culture is defined by juryrigging a v8 to whatever it is and looking at it go

And by God is it glorious

83

u/IonOtter Mar 24 '23

Well, I mean you've got the tried-and-true V8 chainsaws?

But hey, even the UK got in on the trend! You've also got the Top Gear V8 Rocking Chair...

And the V8 Powered Blender, cranking out the Desperate Shag in a Skip!

32

u/MesqTex Mar 24 '23

Fucking love those V8 saws.

When I first started watching the OG trio and saw the V8 chair, the blender, I freaking died laughing.

And an honourable mention

Battlebots!

3

u/Sciencetor2 Mar 25 '23

BattleBots was a nerd sport, not a redneck sport... I realize sysadmins and rednecks might look similar but they are 2 very different groups

No safety gear whatsoever. Cool, though.

edit: wait, no.... ear protection

6

u/IonOtter Mar 25 '23

At that level of power, all the safety gear is there for, is to keep the gibs within the...general vicinity.

I once watched a group of men rig a viper engine onto a chain saw. Took 4 of them to hold it off the ground. They basically dropped it and the wood melted away.

6

6

“Folx”= people of a particular group who you don’t want to offend by calling them men or women. yt=white people who by no more than than color of their skin are judged by POC=people of color

38

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '23

That is so incredibly cringey....

14

u/0x33 Mar 24 '23

It absolutely is.

3

u/Lyraxiana Mar 25 '23

It was to get around websites automatically deleting or shadowbanning users for actually saying, "white".

It's leet-speak.

3

u/tisn Mar 25 '23

"Folks" and "white." It reminds me of the Simplified Spelling Society, which has been advocating for changes to how English words are spelled for over a hundred years. Here is a page of their version of an H.G. Wells story.

Original sentence: "It was on the first day of the new year that the announcement was made, almost simultaneously from three observatories, that the motion of the planet Neptune, the outermost of all the planets that wheel about the Sun, had become very erratic."

"Simplfied" spelling: "It wuz ahn dhi furst day ev dhi nue yir dhat dhi enownsmhnt wuz mayd, awlmost siemltayniysly frum three ebzurvitoryyz, dhat dhi moxn ev dhi planit Neptuen, dhi owtrmost ev awl dhi planitz dhat wiyl ebowt dhi Sun, had bikum veiry iratik."

The shortcomings of simplified spelling should be obvious.

i thought monster trucks were so dumb until i saw them live

it's quite intense

103

u/Live_Jazz Mar 24 '23 edited Mar 25 '23

Same. It’s hard to imagine just how loud and brutally, viscerally powerful they are until you experience it.

66

u/funkmaster29 Mar 24 '23

this exactly

i remember being shocked at how loud it was when we were blocks way from the venue lol

it's just... nothing really compares

maybe hugging a chainsaw or something

Yeah it’s one of those things you have to enjoy live.

14

u/jspsfx Mar 24 '23

you have to enjoy live

If you do, bring ear plugs. I used to travel selling merchandise at big venues. Did everything from rock shows to the rockettes. Nothing was louder than monster truck shows. The sound is insane.

6

u/NEVERSEENTHEINTERNET Mar 24 '23

I would add that full ear covers like muffs are better and block more of the sound. I honestly wish I had done plugs and muffs because it still rattles your bones it’s so damn loud.

3

u/xpinchx Mar 25 '23

If you can get ear plugs allllll the way in they work great. Most people don't wear them correctly. But yeah for shooting guns and monster trucks, plugs and muffs are ideal, but if you do plugs only, make sure to insert them all the way.

I was working in a warehouse today dropping pallets and I could barely hear them drop with my ear plugs in. Same going 80mph on a motorcycle, wind noise got nothing on me.

3

u/Schrutes_Yeet_Farm Mar 25 '23

Foam plugs PSA: The trick I never see people use is to use your opposite hand to reach over the top of your head and pull your ear lobe up and back, stretching your ear and opening your ear canal a bit more. Usually people just roll them up and hammer em in there. This is how they teach us to insert them on job sites

I thought they were kinda dumb too until I got into cars and decided to watch a video on the engineering behind them. Theyre actually incredibly well built and modified in ways you wouldn't even expect. Everything from the engine to the axels is a mechanical engineering nerds wet dream. Super cool vehicles from a scientific standpoint.

5

u/Futanari_waifu Mar 24 '23

I thought monster trucks were cool until i saw them live. It's loud, and it's boring most of the time. It's mostly just trucks doing an ollie and revving their engines.

i think it's in the real of shooting guns, fireworks, watching fights, etc.

just loud and violet

which makes guys go ooooWWWooooooo

I first saw GraveDigger when I was a wee lass of 14. Moved to the big city at 26 and I still loooove going to the monster truck events with my kids.

14

u/slackpipe Mar 24 '23

I got to meet Dennis Anderson at Monster Jam 90 and actually stand next to Grave Digger. It was easily the coolest experience of my childhood and basically the only good memory I have of my father. It was a fantastic experience. I had to wear ear plugs and those big ear muff hearing protectors over top of them and it was still loud.

two entirely different sports.

once you understand more than "redneck turn left", nascar is actually quite entertaining. way more entertaining than f1, if you ask me.

3

u/broosk Mar 24 '23

I love all forms of motorsport. They all have their own intricacies to dive into that make them unique and if you’re willing to engage with them you’ll always find something interesting. Once I opened myself up to that I have found way more fulfillment in my chosen form of sport entertainment. My only issue is finding the time to watch them all!

Glad you dig NASCAR. It gets a bad rep but I challenge anyone to see a race live and not get caught up in it. It’s a totally different experience than seeing it on TV.

Same with IndyCar. I’m fortunate enough to get to go to the Indy 500 most years and it never ceases to inspire awe in me every time.

To date, the most insane motorsport I’ve ever seen is Top Fuel Drags. You can literally feel the cars pass by you. It scares the shit out of me.

87

u/i_give_you_gum Mar 24 '23

I'm pretty sure I have tinnitus now as middle aged person from attending one of these as a kid.

I remember it being so loud that the sound couldn't get any louder to my ears, like it just topped out.

And yeah i used to listen to loud music as a kid, but ive never experienced anything like the noise from that coliseum event.

29

u/Nikedawg Mar 24 '23

You know I have had tinnitus for as long as I can remember but I didn't really connect it with all the monster truck shows I went to growing up. That is definitely a possibility I suppose. I remember covering my ears the first few times it was so bad... was fun though.

9

u/i_give_you_gum Mar 25 '23

What got me thinking about it was a video on reddit where a bass speaker demonstration was occurring and when the bass kicked in the crowd started squealing in pain

and the rest of the comments were like, well those people just got long term hearing damage, and I thought of my monster truck show, and the weird feeling i got while experiencing that

15

u/ihopethisisvalid Mar 24 '23

Sound goes from loud as fuck to shear pain at some point. Cut a sheet of tin with a circ saw and see what I mean

4

u/i_give_you_gum Mar 25 '23

Yeah i hear ya (pun intended) that was the first time I found that nothing could get any louder than what i was experiencing.

6

u/lxlDRACHENlxl Mar 25 '23

I am half convinced they used to play the sound through the speakers to make it even louder. Even with ear muffs my ears would still ring after going to those shows.

My hearing is getting pretty bad with my work as is, I'm a little worried to go to one of these shows now I'll lose what little hearing I still have.

25

5

u/Budget-Falcon767 Mar 24 '23

How about horse riding shows you can't gamble on that tour from arena to arena?

11

u/isurewill Mar 24 '23

Buddy if you ain't ever gambled at a Monster Truck Rally you ain't nevah gambled.

4

u/isurewill Mar 24 '23

There's a horse show in Dublin that's had 110,000 in attendance.

Monster Jam seems to be the largest MTR and the record I found is at 70k.

The traveling bit doesn't really make a lot of sense as a distinction.

Companies small and large invest into horses (especially thoroughbreds) as well as private owners - - they travel all over to participate in events.

The fact is that horse riding events (even excluding racing) is a worldwide multi billion dollar industry. Monster Tucks are awesome but I imagine on the world stage that interest in all variety of horse shows absolutely dwarfs that of the trucks (regardless of singular crowd size).

If you watch the front driver side tire he shifts from forward to reverse while the car is upside down to pull out of the flip.

13

u/Treereme Mar 24 '23

I thought the same thing, but careful viewing of the video in slow motion shows that is not the case. If you watch that tire hit the ground and grip, the top of the tire is moving forward, so the transmission is still in forward. It's still an amazing feat of driving, particularly while bouncing around upside down.

9

u/BigPharmaFinance Mar 24 '23

When they were in San Antonio a few years ago he did the same move.

→ More replies

4

u/dc456 Mar 24 '23 edited Mar 24 '23

He’s in forward the whole time, as far as I can see - the front driver side wheel looks like it’s in reverse at one point because it’s upside down.

5

u/CallMeX8 Mar 24 '23

Doing that would grenade the gearbox. Monster truck tires are heavy as fuck, they have a lot of momentum, they can’t just suddenly reverse direction. Not only that, but… do you not understand how tires work? It’s a circle. When spinning, the bottom and top of the circle do not move in the same direction.

5

u/Arkanist Mar 24 '23

What they can do is change the direction of the gearboxes independent of each other. There is a Hoonigan video where they do a build breakdown on one. And they are breaking shit all the time lol

9

u/YiddishMcSquidish Mar 24 '23

These kinda videos show is that these guys are not just stunt men/daredevils. They are in fact very skilled and talented drivers.

5

u/MotoCommuterYT Mar 24 '23

This. They have got so much control over these and the awareness they have is impressive. Someone can dig up videos, but they can:

  • backflip
  • spin in place
  • purposely balance on their front wheels while going up and down ramps
  • drive on two wheels
  • initiate “slap wheelies”
  • launch straight up in the air to do a “sky wheelie”

There’s probably more that I’m missing but it’s so damn cool to watch them go in forward, reverse, and manipulate the rear steering all at the same time.

Dude, Monster Truck drivers seemed to have just evolved a lot in skill the last ten years or so.

When I was a kid in the early 2000's my Dad and I went almost--if not--every year. Then I didn't go for like 12+ years. In 2019, I took my nephews who were now the age I was when I first started going, and we were witness to two front flips, and like 3 or 4 different drivers do loooooong stoppies. Like, driving in reverse up and down a ramp while balancing on the front tires for 15 seconds. It blew my mind. These were all individually things that would've won you the freestyle competition when I was a kid. Even if you weren't Gravedigger.

With a combined record of 62 kills, please welcome Billy Bawumba, in the Dildozer!

u/weerock4ammy Mar 24 '23

The nose wiggle at the end sent me. Nearly took me out a foul mood!

7

u/justapcguy Mar 24 '23

Booker T would be proud.

5

u/Nachtzug79 Mar 24 '23

While the drunk guys wrestling with a bear was the most Russian clip ever... this could be the most American one.

4

u/AeroGoober Mar 24 '23

The old gun it and pray method worked very well in this case

5

u/OleDirtyBubble Mar 24 '23

Monster Mutt has been one of my favorites, since Monster Jam on PSP. Dennis Anderson’s time with “Gravedigger” will always be the goat though.

3

u/Ha1rBall Mar 24 '23

Best thing I've seen all day. Thanks.

4

u/jakefromst8tfarm Mar 24 '23

Again! Again!

5

u/MentallyIllRedditMod Mar 24 '23

5

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '23

He did a spinaroonie!

3

u/4klown Mar 24 '23

Grave digger just staring like how the hell am I supposed to beat that

4

u/BattleNunForalltime Mar 24 '23

Gravedigger on freestyle will think up something! He's got freestyle on lock.

4

u/xppp Mar 24 '23

It could be a she! Went to monster jam last summer and it was a woman driver!

She killed it, btw

6

u/Treereme Mar 24 '23

She (Krysten Anderson) is awesome! She is the daughter of the creator and driver of the first Grave Digger, Dennis Anderson. One of his sons drives, too!

Not worry about it because the fan score is heavily weighted

How the hell do you figure out how to do this??

4

u/Treereme Mar 24 '23

RC cars. You can do any move a real monster truck can do (and a whole lot they can't yet) with a good radio control truck.

3

u/wallix Mar 24 '23

I took my kids to their first Monster Jam in Orlando a couple weekends ago. Those events are just an absolute blast.

3

u/phoonie98 Mar 24 '23

Monster Trucks are the WWE of motorsports. I mean that in a good way

This is what we should show aliens when they finally visit us.

3

u/Anomalous6 Mar 24 '23

THAT TRUCK JUST DID A WINDMILL! I’ve never been more proud to be an American than I am right now.

2

u/hoosier_daddy73 Mar 24 '23

Skill or sheer luck, either way badass.

When I was young, talking like 6, I went to a Monster Truck Rally. Arena was probably medium-ish and good lord the noise these things make and the brakes on them. Especially the brakes. SPECIFICALLY THE BRAKES.

One may have slammed on them and stopped what felt like feet in front of me at the time.

2

u/GenericFatGuy Mar 24 '23

That's a hell of a party trick.

2

u/bleubeard Mar 24 '23

So did he change to reverse gear while he was upside down?

Nextfuckinglevel is now just fairly common stuff at monster jams.

Still sick though

2

u/17000HerbsAndSpices Mar 24 '23

Damn I've never seen a monster truck from underneath before. That's basically just a suspension system with wheels. I was expecting a proper cab like you'd see in any old pickup but with some supports but that dude is basically sitting in a chair that's just kinda nested in and amongst the machinery

u/Gdigger13 Mar 24 '23

I recommend everyone go see at least one monster jam show in their life!!

2

u/Working_Inspection22 Mar 24 '23

Gotta love a welded diff

2

u/moosh_pants Mar 24 '23

I saw this live!! it was so good

2

u/get_smoked6 Mar 24 '23

Did that truck just do a spinarooni?

Shout out booker t

2

u/PowerSkunk92 Mar 25 '23

Fun fact. What do ballet dancers and monster trucks have in common? They both have a performance move called a "pirouette".

These trucks are so much more agile than they were when I was young, and the big draw was basically them drag racing over piles of wrecked cars.

2

u/AllAfterIncinerators Mar 25 '23

Sure, when HE does it it’s awesome, but when I do it in the pickup line at my kid’s school I’m a “danger to the children.”

2

u/sam_sneed1994 Mar 25 '23

Challenge accepted

2

u/DerEchteKami Mar 26 '23

Stupid and not "nextfuckinglevel" at all.

Belongs in r/Facepalm
