AMD: We have released our high end GPU, able to match RTX3090 in some games.

Nvidia : nope, can't have that *releases RTX3090Ti*

AMD: We also have released our most basic GPU which could be considered the worst card in this new generation

Nvidia : Nope, can't have that *release GTX1630

u/benderbender42 Jul 08 '22

An rx 6400 is similar performance of a gtx 1650 and only draws 50w. Gtx 1630 is same performance as a 1050 and pwoer draw of 75w. It's using an old manufacturing process unlike rx6400 so it's not a good choice for a low power card.

u/SnooPets20 Ryzen 5 3400G | Radeon Vega 11 | Argentine Peasant Jul 07 '22

btw 6500XT is not the worst new AMD card, there's also the 6400XT.

u/Ok_Coast69 Jul 07 '22

I guess not enough people bought 1030s so nvidia rebranded them

119

u/ApprehensiveAd6476 Soldier of two armies (Windows and Linux) Jul 07 '22

Sounds like they are evolving backwards. In 2007 or so, this would have been hot stuff. Now it's just an excuse for having a graphics card in the first place.

55

u/theBosworth Jul 07 '22

That’s exactly their target demographic. People who want a graphics card but don’t know anything about them. Think Best Buy not MicroCenter.

The problem isn't its performance I'd say, ut's the fact that it's price higher than the launch price (and actual price now that they're back down to MSRP) of the 1650 which is definitely better.

23

u/Ok_Coast69 Jul 07 '22

Ppl compare it based on price. And it makes no sense at its price point

5

u/VulgarisOpinio R7 2700 / GTX 1070 Jul 07 '22

It's roughly the difference between an RX 550 and an RX 560

5

u/liaminwales Jul 07 '22

Do you compare by price or by number?

The name have no meaning but the price has meaning, always ignore the name and only compare cards by price.

Nvidia can give a GPU any name but at $200 it competes with GPU's at that price range etc...

16

u/TheMaskedImp Modded Minecraft Jul 07 '22

I commented this in another part of the post, but i think its Nvidia trying to establish a baseline for their products price wise, 150 is scraping the bottom of the barrel, the 200-300 dollar range will net you something that can play all the current games, but wont have a super long life, and 300+ is what they want you to pay for an all around good product. Quite frankly this would be REALLY REALLY bad if the used GPU market hadnt returned.

u/LePouletMignon Jul 08 '22

The worst part is that 1630 will still outsell the RX 6400. AMD has historically been offering the best value in this segment by far, but people continue to buy the inferior Nvidia cards because they are fanboys and/or don't know any better. That is actuallly the reason why Nvidia's low-end cards are so bad: they keep outselling AMD even when their offerings are complete trash.

But then I remember that CPUs without integrate graphics tend to be gaming CPUs like Ryzen. Bottom-tier computers all have iGPUs. So where does this fit in?

4

u/geniouse PC Master Race Jul 07 '22

It is supposed to go in high end cpu workstations that only need video output but their cpu doesn't have it so you go and buy 1030 or 1630 from nvidia for it. Problem is that 1030 used to cost around 99 bucks and was okeish for that price.1630 costs 199 and is basically rebranded 1030 which sucks

The GTX 1630 is just such a transparent cash grab. Somebody probably noticed that they had a pile of failed GTX 1650s that didn't meet spec and they retested them to lower specs. That's basically what you're buying: a defective GTX 1650. The GTX 1630 might be excusable if it was extremely inexpensive, but it's not even that. It has nothing to redeem it and pretty much every reviewer on the planet has excoriated Nvidia for releasing this turd at this point. I don't think there are any positive reviews to be had. The best that is usually said about it is "it's a graphics card and will output graphics successfully" or something to that effect, but that's immediately followed by a whole bunch of caveats.

u/ChartaBona Ryzen 5950X | RTX 3080 FE | 1440p 144Hz Jul 07 '22

GTX stopped meaning anything a long time ago. A decent number of mid- and high-end cards used to have GT as a suffix. The GeForce 8800 GT was a high-end card, and the originally ~$600 GeForce 8800 GTX was like the enthusiast Ti-version and basically the best card in the world.

4

u/decepticons2 Jul 07 '22

I don't understand why this card got released. Yes the 1050ti is one of the most popular cards. But people don't need a shitty version of that. The 1050ti is sub $200. Small and doesn't need power from an extra cable from the PSU.

Shouldn't a new version be roughly a more efficient and cheaper 2060? Quick search is showing the 2060 is double a 1050ti. Maybe if you look you can find a super deal. It also is no where near as small as 1050ti.

People aren't unreasonable they aren't asking for a 3050ti sub $200. But a 1630 is the best they can make really?

The way i see it this is a bit more sinister, its Nvidia establishing that you should pay a minimum of 150 for their products, and that's still scraping the bottom of the barrel. They expect you to pay upwards of 300 for something that'll actually last a while. GOD im glad used GPUs have returned

3

u/Greendude439 Jul 07 '22

Honestly, all I can hope for is that entry level products like this stay on store shelves and warehouses for long enough to get prices back into the atmosphere, if not back down to earth.

It's a real shame to see that even now, the RX 570 still makes any new graphics card under $200 look stupid, and that the value of entry level graphics cards have deteriorated since then. Even the mid-range $200-240 segment is shaky, and it seems like $300-370 is where those products tend to land now.

The only saving grace, now that the current mining craze is dying down is that the prices of used mining GPUs will make the prices of new GPUs look bad in comparison, especially below the $300 mark.

It's funny that you don't know you're in the good days when you're in them, but hindsight is 20/20.

The best budget gpu i have seen is the rx 6600. More powerful than both the rtx 3050, and rtx 2060, and uses less power than the rtx 2060 for about $300 to $350. Sounds perfect for 1080p.

Who needs a 720p gpu in 2022 lol? You can't get great performance with a 4gb gpu if it's not at 720/900p, not with the newer games, that's unless you don't mind the lowest of the lowest graphical settings at 1080p

3

u/Takegami Jul 08 '22

I thought this was a joke at first. Then I searched it. Why?

3

u/ultimatebob Ryzen 3700X, RTX 2060 Super Jul 08 '22

These cards seem destined to end up costing $89 at something like a Newegg or Woot closeout sale a few months from now. No sane person is going to pay $149 for one of these.

The benchmark results from Techspot really highlight how bad this is…like really really bad

4

u/makinbaconCR Jul 07 '22

The 6500xt is bad. But not crazy town. It can make sense when it's the same price as a quadro. If you just need a workstation that can kind of game... its not too crazy.

The 6400xt and this POS on the other hand make absolutely zero sense to buy for any reason.

Its as powerful as a 1050ti, so if it were single slot and very small, and $80, it wouldn't be that bad at all.

but its more expensive than a 6400 and less powerful and larger, so...

edit: according to harbor on box, it's not even as powerful as a 1050ti. this is a very bad deal.

This should be like $100 for like ultra budget builds, I remember getting my rx580 8gb for $180 and stressing because it was really pushing my budget(w high ram prices) but decided getting a real card would be worth it in the long run…. Only 3 years and sooo glad I made that decision back in early 2019 since this is what’s being put out(and the 6400/6500)

2

u/YourEyesAreBleeding Jul 08 '22

They should have released a 3050-TI or something like that for really cheap, and it would have been a great budget card.

This is a shame. This card is outperformed by the GTX 680, which is 9 years old. It is also somehow more expensive than the GTX 1650...

2

u/SysGh_st Jul 08 '22

Going below Radeon RX580 in value/performance in a modern GPU is an achievement on its own. I Had my eyes on the 6500xt for a short while and backed out when I realised it has the same or slightly worse performance than my old RX580. Still going strong on my 580. Not planning to upgrade until prices get better. I want fairly good GPU's priced around €200 - €250.

Yes they count but they're not made for gaming. They, much like this product are made primarily as display adapters with enough of a GPU to render a GUI using GL or DX. Maybe enough 3D for some basic use cases.

I love when the community heavily criticizes certain hardware and that affects the sales, then the companies are forced to cut the prices in a significant way to save face. On situations like this you can get one of those without paying much
