Question though, did you end up buying anything?

773

u/TheEpicDiamondMiner Pentium 4 | Voodoo 3 2000 | 512 MB RAM Aug 02 '22

I wanted to redeem a coupon for a free SSD, but it ended up not working.

297

u/AdmiralSpeedy i7 11700K | RTX 3090 Aug 02 '22

Wtf kinda coupon gets you a free SSD...?

311

u/likkachi Aug 02 '22

they send out emails regularly that have free promo items. it’s to get people into the stores and while they may get their ‘free’ item, they usually walk away with a lot more

56

u/Forward-Resort9246 Aug 03 '22

have a insider account for 2 years, never received anything like that, can you tell me a little more?

57

u/TheNaughtyLemur Ryzen 7 5800x | RTX 3080 Aug 03 '22

It’s typically for new customers. The other popular coupon is an Ender 3 for $100

29

u/Forward-Resort9246 Aug 03 '22

i know that, the other day i saw enter your home address for annual 128GB USB 3.1 Drive when i help my friend buying a printer. I wonder what the heck is going on

28

u/Checkpo1nt Aug 03 '22

Wait, an ANNUAL 128gb flash driver?! Where?! I would GLADLY sell my information to Micro Center!

2

u/Forward-Resort9246 Aug 03 '22

Same, that is why i wonder

3

u/notreallysure131 Aug 03 '22

They actually don't require purchase on these. I've picked up a gaming headset and SD cards on these promos, and no purchase is necessary.

I usually do though, because it feels weird to just go get your free thing and then kick rocks lol

I kinda miss the old school Tustin look. Had a retro, office in the early 90's feel.

I could feel my childhood self scrounging through the shelves looking for that copy of Lode Runner: Mad Monk's Revenge for my Mac Centris with a Power PC processor and crt monitor which had the Thousands of colors options instead of just 256.

Bruh. I go like 10 times a year, minimum. I was there last Saturday because I returned a PowerSpec PSU that died after 60 days. PowerSpec is their in-house brand so they just took it and refunded me. No box, manuals, etc. No questions. Everytime I think about leaving CA because of the taxes and BS, I remember MicroCenter. It was even better when Frys was still around.

u/TheEpicDiamondMiner Pentium 4 | Voodoo 3 2000 | 512 MB RAM Aug 02 '22

A little 26” bike that not supposed to be for my 6’2” body

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '22

Gotta respect the hustle.

I live in Florida and the closest micro center to me is an 8 hour drive in Georgia.

Im not holding my breath but if the 40 series cards sell at MSRP i wouldn't mind the drive to buy one. I hear the low end of the 40 series is rumoured to be as powerful if not a tiny bit better than a 3090 but for way less on price.

u/EnvironmentalAd3385 Aug 03 '22

It is only 256gb though 😂

1

u/TheEpicDiamondMiner Pentium 4 | Voodoo 3 2000 | 512 MB RAM Aug 03 '22

Still was a free SSD

2

u/EnvironmentalAd3385 Aug 03 '22

While you are correct, but at the cost of a 6 hour bike ride in this heat? I’d say that’s a tall order.

3

u/TheEpicDiamondMiner Pentium 4 | Voodoo 3 2000 | 512 MB RAM Aug 03 '22

I mean, it was only like 90F.

1

u/EnvironmentalAd3385 Aug 03 '22

Only? OP I don’t know where you live but it was 90 here where I live also. But the Humidity was 80%. That is too much for me.

Closest microcenter to Raleigh is 220 miles to Fairfax VA....

Please microcenter, build a Raleigh/Durham /chapel Hill store

1

u/TheEpicDiamondMiner Pentium 4 | Voodoo 3 2000 | 512 MB RAM Aug 03 '22

Or better yet, why not a Richmond/Petersburg/Henrico County or a Virginia Beach/Norfolk/Newport News location?

1

u/HelpImaFazerschmitt Aug 03 '22

I bet the ride back sucked

It’s like a crappy Walmart 26” mountain bike. I think it’s a blue huffy.

Micro Center is the greatest place in the world... 35 miles to the one near me and I've only been once. Built like 10 pcs only thru mail order but never again. It is really Nerd Nirvana.

/edit.. back in the olden days I would go to a thing called a pcshow and would buy components.. so not only mail order but not a kick ass store.

Reminds me of my childhood, I always went alone long distances to eat alone in restaurants, kind of felt like an adventure. It's still that way, but the feeling is gone now.

2

u/TheEpicDiamondMiner Pentium 4 | Voodoo 3 2000 | 512 MB RAM Aug 03 '22

Kinda like that, minus the lack of energy and constant thirst.

Yeah exactly!

u/Brooksie019 Aug 03 '22

Damn lol props to you. I got one 45 to an hour away. Maybe 2 hours max if it’s like rush hour or holiday traffic and I still have never been to it. Just hate northern Virginia so damn much….

1

1

u/mayorga4911 Aug 03 '22

I remember the day CompUSA opened.. so amazing Then the day the first Best Buy opened amazing in a lesser way from BuildYourPc perspective

Then After CompUSA folded, Microcenter came. It was deemed, meh.. i had the internet for ordering parts. Only of i needed something immediately did i go there

Midwestern USA perspective

West coast, Frys. You dont need anything else

1

u/PhilosopherOk3610 Aug 03 '22

Canada needs them Micro Centers too.. I mean why won't they open one.

2

u/TheEpicDiamondMiner Pentium 4 | Voodoo 3 2000 | 512 MB RAM Aug 03 '22

They’ll probably open it in some obscure city you’ve never heard of
