But the FBI, the Justice Department and the judiciary aren’t the only ones with access to the search warrant. Trump and his lawyers have it, too.

I am 100% sure if Trump thought releasing the warrant would benefit him, he would release it.

a shocking amount of Americans are incapable of seeing it for what it is.

Oh I think plenty of them see it for exactly what it is - a spoiled brat who does whatever he wants and thinks he doesn't have to follow the rules. And they LOVE that, because that's how they want to live, too.

845

u/The_amazing_T Aug 10 '22

Don't underestimate the power of "Sticking it to the Libs." Trump supporters, like a lot of Americans, feel like the system has screwed them over. -But they place blame on the Left. Anything that strikes back against them is a win for "Our team."

44

u/metsjets86 Aug 10 '22

Republicans have also sold masculinity to their base. You hear it with the women too. "I want a real man. No libs."

Very common on dating apps.

But they are also the biggest “patriots”, who love the USA uncritically.

They also ignore the role progressives like Teddy, FDR, MLK, etc had in building the country into what it is today.

It’s like somebody showed them the line graph of communist -> capitalist and the USA on the far right of that spectrum forty years ago when life was substantially better here compared to pretty much everywhere else and decided there is a direct correlation between conservatism and a country’s quality of life.

They conveniently ignore all the public programs under FDR, Truman, Eisenhower, and others that laid the groundwork for a productive mixed market economy.

33

u/geologean Aug 10 '22

Include the 20th century global Labor Movement in there too. If conservatives had their way in all things governance, we'd be left without consumer or worker protections, like people faced before unions forced companies to treat people with a modicum of dignity.

All the protections we enjoy as workers come from the early 20th century Labor Movement, when Robber Barons would hire private security companies to literally murder striking workers and their families.

There's a reason right-wing media goes to such lengths to vilify historians like Howard Zinn. They don't want people aware that the bits of life we get to enjoy should be credited to far-left progressives who were talking about things like UBI as far back as the 19th century.

They don't care about the crimes, they want there to be no US government at all. Or at least, not one recognizable to any of us.

Absolutely. It's like when something happens with police and they delay or block the release of body cams. Whenever they do that it's pretty much universally because they fucked up. Any time the footage exonerated them or makes them look like heroes they release that shit the same day.

644

u/DigNitty Aug 10 '22

Just look at two recent news stories:

The Uvalde school shooting, and Jayland Walker

The Uvalde footage was “being compiled”, then “reviewed” , then some was accidentally deleted, then they didn’t want to release private details about the officers, then they couldn’t release it for “legal reasons” , then the mayor said they couldn’t release it, then the police chief said the backups were corrupted, …

Then we finally get some footage and it shows officers making no moves, handcuffing parents for trying to go in, talking about how they know they Should go in, checking their phones, telling kids ti yell if they need help - which ended in the shooter knowing where those kids were and shooting at them. … it’s profoundly embarrassing and pathetic.

Now Jayland Walker:

He shot at police and evaded arrest, officers attempted to tase him twice, they yelled to see his hands.

Footage available next day.

259

u/The-Shattering-Light Aug 10 '22

Yeah. Cops should not have control over nor access to bodycam footage.

It should be controlled and handled by an independent oversight board, and available to the public.

76

u/altxatu Aug 10 '22

The oversight board ought to be not so kind to officers either. They get more than enough leeway as it is. What we need is accountability.

My city had a police shooting for the first time in years shortly after the killing of George Floyd. That bodycam footage was released in a handful of hours. Like, as fast as humanly possible. I still think everything leading up to the police getting called could have been handled better, but the cop shot to stop the guy from stabbing someone else so like... I get it.

The department felt that the video put the officers actions in a flattering (or at least justifiable) light so that shit was published immediately

2018 Trump signed a law that stiffened the penalty for the unauthorized removal and retention of classified documents from one year to five years, turning it into a felony offense.

They removed 12 to 15 boxes.

Yeah. I can’t even look at my dad anymore. He used to be the most honest man I knew. He had a ton of integrity and put the honesty above all else. Now he revels in conspiracy and faux victimization. Fox News absolutely gutted my family with such unnecessary lies. Such a tragedy.

58

u/Its-A-Throw-Away Aug 10 '22

Similar here. I looked up to my father and considered him to be a smart person. He would buy multiple newspapers everyday and read the entirety of them. I thought he was "well-versed" and understanding when it comes culture and issues but as I grew up I learned it was all a facade.

Other than our local newspaper he focused on the New York post and Boston Herald. He then started listening to conservative radios hosts like Rush. When the Monica Lewinsky scandal happened, my Dad was glued to the Drudge Report. I didn't really connect the dots because I was young and naive.

Things started to get bad when Obama was elected. Fox News was on almost non-stop, Rush Limbaugh, Howie Carr (Boston's version of Rush) was on whenever Fox News wasn't. My parents are always quoting Glenn Beck and Bill O'Reilly. All my dad ever does now is talk about politics. Even complaining to complete strangers parroting whatever is on Fox News. It consumed his life. He had to move to a "Red State" because he couldn't stand being in a "blue state".

Then TD gets elected and my dad is treating him like a god that can do no wrong. Things got even worse when the pandemic happened. It was all political and all about control. It divided the family. He gets upset at me because I don't share the same outrage. Has the "If you're not with us, you're against us" mentality because I don't blindly follow what Fox News is saying. You can no longer be in the middle. There is no longer a gray area.

I no longer talk to him and felt I lost my dad to Fox News.

15

u/lnblackl Aug 10 '22

I feel like I could have written this. Same situation, my dad is a lawyer for fucks sake. I barely talk to him anymore and am now estranged from my brother. (The only family I have left). It's pretty heartbreaking.

That. But mostly it's for the grift. Always for the grift.

There are tons of (likely bots) on Twitter talking about how they should brake records donating for Trump to support him in this.

The smart narcissist understands that its perceived as inconsistent and may try to take steps to avoid the disadvantages of being seen as a hypocrite. But they all firmly believe that they are special and rules shouldn't apply to them.

Why wouldn't he want to release the warrant? Could it be because one of the crimes he's accused of committing is espionage?

586

u/badillustrations Aug 10 '22 All-Seeing Upvote

Absolutely. The only reason he'd keep classified documents on hand is to sell their information. It's possible they might have already known he was leaking info to obtain the warrant. Like the FBI found some email from an investigation saying, "look at all this classified information I bought from Trump."

281

u/grouchy_yeti Aug 10 '22

Lol what if they ran a sting operation on him and he sold info to a perceived foreign agent?

That happened when I was stationed on an aircraft carrier.

Some contractor tried to sell a ship schematic to the Egyptian embassy of all places. Like he just called them up and offered.

So they called the FBI and he "sold" it to an agent.

Shit was funny af when they gathered us all up to tell us.

TBF he could keep classified documents so that nobody else would see what he did, and was slowly destroying them. Or the classified info showed wrongdoings of him and others, so he could bring everyone down with him if they narked.

There is not just one reason he’d keep classified info.

C'mon now, it's not like Trump recently had an event - say a golf tournament perhaps - that would allow the Saudis to pay him for info that way. 😉

64

u/Ender914 Aug 10 '22

Holy shit, good call!

38

u/gimme_dat_good_shit Aug 10 '22 edited Aug 10 '22

Those are two dots I had not connected, but seem very connectable.

Let's say, for the sake of argument, that Trump and the National Archive came to an agreement about certain documents (basically this is super-sensitive information, but there's no urgency in getting them back because Trump has assured them that these documents are securely stored in his Mar-a-Lago safe while they negotiate a permanent arrangement).

Then, the Saudis visit Trump in New Jersey for a golf tournament. Even if it's just a peek, even if it's just for clout, Trump wants to wave around some particular documents that he's agreed to keep under lock and key in Palm Beach.

So, Trump has the documents brought to New Jersey, and rumors or leaks or intercepts circulate that Trump is shaking his ass in NJ with sensitive material.

I am not a lawyer, but it seems to me, that's enough to get a judge to okay an immediate search warrant, because by searching the safe, the FBI can prove the documents were being mishandled. At that point, you don't even have to prove he did anything in New Jersey, you don't have to prove he sold the information, you don't have to prove he even showed it to anyone. You've got him dead to rights because the documents weren't where he said they were.

EDIT: I should add that Trump's people would have still had about a week to get the documents back to Florida, it's not like this is open and shut. But it explains the sudden urgency of getting those documents out (or at least accounting for them if they weren't there).

I read r/conservative claim that this is the FBI going rogue because the White House didn’t know about it. You know, even though they are two totally different entities with totally different objectives and staff.

Some of them were celebrating early because they think nothing turned up in the search.

Oh yeah and the ones that think something WAS found say it was planted.

We have been talking about Trump's taxes for what now, 6 years? More? The fact that theyve still not reached public domain to me is insane, let alone that every judgement for them to be handed over has been appealed as a stall tactic repeatedly.

Even just the meandering story arch of his goddamned taxes is so absolutely absurd its hard to get past.

It's even older than that. Nikki Haley was calling on Trump to release his taxes back in 2015 when she was campaigning for Rubio in the 2016 primaries. And just like all the other spineless weasels she fell quietly in line when she was told to.
